Get on with 2008 OLYMPICS ! ! !

Olympics is the buzz word for this season and the whole world is set to watch the international multi sport event happening in Bejing from August 8. The countries are ready with its key players to make sure that they take enough Olympic glory!

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

Let’s get into the details of Olympic. The first thing that strikes us is the Olympic torch which is specially designed to remain lit in 65 kilometer per hour winds, and in rain of up to 50 millimeters per hour. The relay, with the theme Journey of Harmony, is expected to carry the torch thousands of kilometers. The Olympic Flame remains lit for the duration of the Games and signifies the values of Peace and Brotherhood which is the basis of the Olympics.

The 2008 Olympic Mascots are the five Fuwa or good luck dolls. It consists of five members that incorporate fish, giant panda, fire, Tibetan antelope, and swallow designs. They roughly correspond with the five elements: water, metal, fire, wood, and earth. The five Fuwa are named Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, and Nini. When the first syllable of each of the five names are said together, the result is the phrase Běijīng huānyíng nĭ; which means "Beijing welcomes you".

Then comes the Olympic Rings which are the most widely used symbol.
The rings are of colors, white, red, blue, green, yellow, and black, were chosen such that each nation has at least one of these colors in its national flag.

In the closing ceremony, Flag bearers from each participating country enter the stadium in single file and behind them march all of the athletes without any grouping of nationality. Three national flags are hoisted on flagpoles .The flag of Greece is raised on the middle pole honoring the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the flag of the host country on the left hand pole, and then the flag of the country hosting the next Summer or Winter Olympic Games, on the right hand pole. The highlight of the opening ceremony of the Olympics is the entrance of the Olympic flame into the stadium. The final torchbearer is always a citizen of the host country whose identity is kept secret until the last moment.

To add on the 2008 has got a beautiful slogan "One World, One Dream"
Hope we all strive to ebb off the differences and chase the goal of peace and prosperity together :-)

BEYOND BOUNDARIES !

Starting with the eye opener!

“This Earth is His, to Him belong those vast and boundless skies;
Both seas within Him rest, and yet in that small pool He lies.”

Why is one person sad and the other happy?
Why is one person fearful and anxious and another full of faith and confidence? There is an answer to these in the workings of your conscious and subconscious minds. As a person thinks, feels and believes, so is the condition of his or her mind, body and circumstances.

A magnetized piece of iron lifts twelve times its own weight and when it is demagnetized it will not even lift one. In the same way, people who are magnetized are full of faith and confidence and are born to succeed. Others are demagnetized. Your subconscious is like a garden and as you sow seeds of thoughts in it so shall you reap in your environment. The thing always happens that you really believe in and the belief in a thing makes it happen!

Remember you have infinite riches within your reach. Unleash the power of subconscious, start now and let wonders happen in your life! Essentially, answered prayer is the realization of your hearts desire!

Tackle the GROUP DISCUSSION with valor!

What is a group discussion?
-A talk where you all tell your views on a particular topic
-One can support/oppose the stated topic
-One can also state the pros and cons of the topic
-It is definitely different from a debate
-Generally the topic is related to one of the current issues

How to present yourself in a GD
-Be yourself and don’t project you as someone else
-Your body language and mannerisms talk a lot about you.
-Be assertive and not aggressive
-Seek clarification if you have any doubts regarding the subject.
-Be vocal, the evaluator wants to hear you speak
-Don't lose your cool if anyone says anything you object to.
-Brush up on your leadership skills; you can also motivate the other members of the team to speak
-You will be evaluated on your alertness, knowledge, Problem solving ability, clarity and team spirit.

There are various kinds of GD:
-Fish market : Typical as the word says, everyone expresses their opinion but hardly any listens. Its all about their aggression to rule the GD.
-Silent Killer :Not much is contributed by the members and each one waits for the other to break the ice.
-Happy Family : This is the ideal from of discussion where everyone makes their point and also listens to what the rest opine on that issue.
-One man show : Here monotony prevails and just one speaker talks, talks and talks. The rest do not contribute even when they are pulled into the GD.

Key elements which they are looking for in a GD
-Team spirit
-Leadership qualities
-Awareness
-Reasoning ability
-Assertiveness
-Content
-Creativity
-Flexibility
-Inspiring ability
-Listening

Initiating a GD is a high profit-high loss strategy.
-When you initiate a GD, you not only grab the opportunity to speak, you also grab the attention of the examiner and your fellow candidates.
-If you can strike a positive first impression with your content and communication skills, it will help you sail through the discussion.
-But if you initiate a GD and stammer/ stutter/ quote wrong facts and figures, the damage might be irrevocable.
-If you initiate a GD impeccably but don't speak much after that, it gives the impression that you started the GD for the sake of starting it or getting those initial kitty of points earmarked for an initiator!
-When you start a GD, you are responsible for putting it into the right perspective or framework. So initiate one only if you have in depth knowledge about the topic at hand.

Summarization Techniques
-Most GDs do not really have conclusions. A conclusion is where the whole group decides in favour or against the topic.
-But every GD is summarised. You can summarise what the group has discussed in the GD in a nutshell.
-Avoid raising new points.
-Avoid stating only your viewpoint.
-Avoid dwelling only on one aspect of the GD.
-Keep it brief and concise.
-It must incorporate all the important points that came out during GD.
-If the examiner asks you to summarise a GD, it means the GD has come to an end. Do not add anything once the GD has been summarised.
-If required you can even take a note pad along to note the key points which will help you to recapitulate.

How to win a GD?
-Make the other members understand your point by giving suitable examples.
-Use quotations. This will help you sail through better. Given a topic like is there any need for censor board? You can start like ‘Hidden apples are always sweet’
-Shock them by looking at the topic differently. For instance topics like Growing Indian population-boon or bane? Many would say 'At the centre of the Indian capital stands a population clock that ticks away relentlessly’. You can add a positive approach by telling 'Nothing's impossible when 1 billion Indians work together'.'
-Give them facts, figures and statistics. For this you need to be well equipped by reading newspapers regularly.
-Use a general statement to put the GD in proper perspective. For example, if the topic is, Should Dhoni be the cricket captain of Indian team? You could start by saying, 'Before jumping to conclusions like, 'Yes, Dhoni should be', or 'No, Dhoni should not be', let's first find out the qualities one needs to be a good captain. Then we can compare these qualities with those that Dhoni possesses. This will help us reach the conclusion in a more objective and effective manner.'

So tell me now, how good are you at the group discussion?

Plastics and Papers!

A road to paradise-Plastics
He is some one who has gone beyond the realm of personal well-being and worked for the well-being of others. It’s all about ordinary people doing extraordinary things! One of the real heroes of CNN IBN is Ahmed Khan who is basically from Bangalore. Ahmed uses plastic in road construction, thereby reducing the ecological impact of plastic and making better roads. Waste plastic proved to be good for construction of road as it increases the life of roads three-fold. This apart, the frequency of road repairs would be reduced as the chances of seepage of rain water is minimized due to presence of plastic. Guess its time for good roads in India ;-)

Papers
With the advent of new technologies we are getting much better-that’s a fact.
Earlier we consumed papers for sending documents, letters, cards etc but with the arrival of Internet and E-mails, we have reduced the use of papers and that’s in a way saving our mother Earth :-)
